The Domènech i Montaner House of Canet de Mar

Lluís Domènech i Montaner was an architect, historian, humanist, politician, graphic designer and, he had students such as Gaudí, Puig i Cadafalch or Jujol. He used an innovative language and an architecture based on a new concept in which he integrated all the arts. Some of his works, such as the Palau de la Música Catalana or the Hospital de Sant Pau, have been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. For Canet it is an honor to have several works of such an outstanding architect.

Lluís Domènech i Montaner married Maria Roura Carnestoltes, born in Canet de Mar, and spent many seasons in this town of Maresme. He, his wife and their eight children lived in the Masía Rocosa, but with so many children they projected a bigger house, together with his son Pere, also an architect and his son-in-law Francesc Guàrdia, between 1918 and 1919. This house is one of the four modernist buildings that Domènech i Montaner built in Canet de Mar.

The Domènech House, which currently holds the Lluís Domènech i Montaner House Museum, is a building flanked by torrents, the Buscaons and the Gavarra. On the facade facing to the first torrent, Domènech placed balconies, and on the other, lobed windows with slender skylights. Either in the windows or in the grandstand of the angle everything indicates that Domènech made his own interpretation of the Gothic style. The materials used are closely related to the place where he built the House. In the lower part he used stone to protect the house from erosion caused by the torrents floods, while in the upper part there is a predominance of brick. It is considered as the last modernist work of Domènech i Montaner.

The other three buildings built by Domènech i Montaner in Canet de Mar are the Ateneu, a building built on an old house where lightning rod with a forge dragon stands out and is currently occupied by the public library of Canet; the Roure House (Riera de Sant Domènec, 1), commissioned in 1889 as a residence by Jacint de Capmany and Paquita Roura; and the reform of the Masia Rocosa. Other works signed by the modernist architect in Canet are the renovation of the Teatre Principal dance floor, the renovation of the Castell de Santa Florentina, the Creu de Pedracastell, the Domènech and Montaner pantheon where he, his wife and two of his children are buried, and the Pantheon of the Font-Montaner family.
