At the beginning of January, when we have not yet dismantled the Christmas ornaments, the festive cycle of Sant Antoni arrives. It is the saint that opens the Week of the Bearded, which the popular voice says is the coldest of the year.
On the eve of the festivity popularly known as ‘Sant Antoni Abad – patron saint of domestic animals’, many towns in Maresme have celebrated the Tres Tombs this past weekend.
One of the most popular Catalan traditions is the Tres Tombs celebration, a festival that blesses animals, mainly horses, mules and other draft animals, although nowadays it is also customary to bring domestic pets such as dogs, cats… It consists of go around the town three times, to show off the animals and the carts. The route always passes through a church or hermitage, where they bless the animals.
There are many towns that, around the same dates as the Tres Tombs, take the opportunity to celebrate festivals related to farm work and pack animals.
