Sant Jordi in El Maresme

During the popular festivity of Sant Jordi, held on April 23rd, patron saint of Catalonia and Aragon, lovers day is celebrated. Tradition establishes that a book must be given as a gift to men and a rose to women. On this day it is very common to see lots of people walking through the streets of towns and villages in all of Catalonia, where small beautiful markets are organized, to buy books and roses for their beloved ones.

Craft workshops, games, gigs, activities for all ages…

The delicious “Pa de Sant Jordi” (bread of Sant Jordi) is also an important part of this popular tradition. It is basically farmer’s bread made of Mahón cheese and tasty sobrasada which combined they draw the 4 bars of the Catalan national flag. It is a very typical product that we can also find in bakeries during the Catalan National Day (Diada de l’Onze de Setembre), among other national celebrations.

Since 1930, this date also coincides with the “World Book Day”, making this festivity a luxury for all the senses.

Festive atmosphere in all the towns of Maresme, with very colorful urban mosaics made with flowers that fill the streets with joy and culture!

Legend of Sant Jordi:

This folkloric legend tells about a town called Montblanc, where a mighty evil dragon was wreaking havoc among the population. To contain its hunger and appettite for destruction, they periodically chose an unlucky inhabitant among all of them by holding a raffle and then submitted him/her to the monster to devour.

Until one day it was the turn of the King’s lovely daughter to be delivered to the beast. To prevent such a tragedy, a courageous Knight named Sant Jordi emerged to face the powerful dragon. After a vicious battle, the hero finally managed to kill the giant reptile with his sword and save the Princess. In the end, the legend tells that from the same place where the evil dragon’s blood was spilled, a beautiful red rose blossomed.

Since the 15th century, a rose fair is organized in Barcelona on the occasion of Sant Jordi’s Day. Many lovers, fiancés and young married couples usually attend the event, which may suggest that the custom of giving a rose as a gift originated from this festival, which was originally held at the Palau de la Generalitat.
