Pastorets performances in Maresme

One of the most deeply rooted traditions in Catalonia when Christmas arrives are the Pastorets performances. Hundreds of performances take place each year between mid-December and the end of February, attended by thousands of spectators.

The Pastorets encourage the meeting of different generations and promote social relations in the places where they develop. The Pastorets are a common project in each town, neighborhood, entity or group of people who always prepare them in an amateur way. They are also a school through which many actors have become professional.

What the Pastorets are?

The Pastorets are a theatrical piece inspired by the Gospel story of Christmas that is represented on a stage and that born from the medieval representations that were held inside the churches on Christmas Day.

These texts, often written in verse, incorporate a well-defined dramatic structure. Many also include music. Dance, special effects or great scenery. These functions are often influenced by current affairs and new contributions. For many years the Pastorets have contributed to the maintenance of the Catalan language in an often hostile environment, especially during the post-war period.

There are many written versions of the Pastorets although today only a few are represented. A substantial change occurred with the premiere in 1891 of the version written by Frederic Soler “Pitarra”, “El bressol de Jesús o en Garrofa i en Pallanga”. This text opened the doors of many theaters to these performances. Other writers followed the path of “Pitarra” and created new texts. Among the best known and most widely represented versions today are the one written by Josep Maria Folch i Torres and which premiered in 1916, and “L’Estel de Natzaret” by Ramon Pàmies.
